This fall, the term of a member of the Board of Architect Examiners will expire. Gary Afseth, an Architect Member from Ashland, will not be serving another term when his second four-year term expires at the end of September.
The Governor's office will appoint an Architect Member to the open position. AIA Oregon will participate in the selection process by considering the applications of persons seeking appointment and by providing its recommendation to the Governor for appointment from the candidates considered. The architect position is open to any architect who is registered in Oregon and has been a resident of Oregon for the past five years. Although board appointments have historically maintained a balanced geographic representation, qualified candidates from throughout the state may apply.
If you are interested in being considered by AIA Oregon for endorsement as a candidate, please contact Stuart Weir at (503) 223-0042.
AIA Oregon's process for endorsement is as follows:
1. Any applicants for BoAE appointment may submit their resumes, letters of interest, and third-party statements to AIA Oregon.
2. The executive director of AIA Oregon will forward all applicant submittals received to the AIA Oregon Executive Committee.
3. The Executive Committee will consider the submittals, taking into account geographical representation; the applicant's history of professional involvement and public service; ethnic and gender diversity of the BoAE; and other considerations as deemed appropriate.
4. The Executive Committee will decide which of the applicants who have submitted materials for consideration it should support for appointment to the available position.
5. AIA Oregon will advise the Governor's office of its deliberations and of its recommendations for appointment.
Please submit your letter of interest by mail or fax to AIA Oregon by Wednesday, August 27.

The Role of a Board Member
(source: Oregon Board of Architect Examiners)
Members are appointed to serve on the Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners through their ability, experience and interest in serving. Board members are also selected to balance broad geographic concerns and interests across the state. The action of the Board works best when all members attend and fully participate in the activities of the Board.
Public and Architect members working together form a productive, effective complement to one another in conducting the work of the Board. Listening to one another's viewpoints and working as a cohesive group provides an excellent forum for developing good policies and procedures and finding fair solutions to problems.
It is important to keep in mind that all members have been appointed to the board to serve the public at large. The concerns and points of view of all interested parties must be represented and considered, but ultimately, the primary responsibility of every board member is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public.
Board member responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Attending all Board Meetings - It is essential that attendance be as consistent and faithful as possible to assure that the broadest possible range of views are brought to bear on the Board's work. State law also places an important emphasis on regular attendance. ORS 182.010 provides that if a member has two successive, unexcused absences, the member forfeits his or her office unless prevented from attending for reasonable cause. |
|
Being Prepared for Meetings - Meeting agenda and background information, correspondence, etc., is provided ahead of each meeting. Each member should be familiar with this information prior to each meeting. |
|
Being Familiar with the Law and Administrative Rules - The Law and Rules that we enforce are quite lengthy and complex. Each member must be as familiar as possible with them to function as an effective Board member. |
|
Representing the Public - The law is intended to safeguard the public interest. This is, therefore, the Board's and each individual member's responsibility. |
|
Attending Regional and National Meetings - Here also, the broadest possible range of views is not essential in representing the state at these meetings. |
Board members receive a per diem for each day or part of day during which they perform Board business. In addition, Board members may claim reimbursement for actual and necessary travel expenses incurred in the performance of official state duties.
